Background of the study
Stress placement in speech is a critical prosodic feature that influences meaning and intelligibility. In Nigerian English, particularly among professionals in Lagos, stress patterns often reflect both the speaker’s educational background and the influence of local speech communities. Lagos, as a major commercial and cultural hub, presents a linguistic landscape where standard pronunciation norms intersect with local variation. This study examines the stress placement rules used by Lagos professionals, employing acoustic analysis to measure factors such as duration, intensity, and pitch variation in stressed versus unstressed syllables. Prior research indicates that professionals with higher education tend to exhibit stress patterns closer to standardized models, whereas those with stronger indigenous language influences might show systematic deviations (Ibrahim, 2023; Okeke, 2024). By analyzing speech samples from a range of professional settings, this investigation seeks to identify the phonetic and sociolinguistic factors that govern stress placement. The study also considers how media exposure and workplace communication affect prosody, with the aim of informing language training programs and speech recognition systems. Overall, understanding stress placement rules will contribute to improved communication clarity and foster better integration of standardized pronunciation practices within professional contexts (Adeniyi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the centrality of stress in conveying meaning, there is a paucity of empirical data on stress placement rules among Lagos professionals. Inconsistent stress patterns may result in reduced clarity and miscommunication in formal contexts, hindering professional interactions and potentially impacting career progression (Okeke, 2024). The lack of systematic research impedes the development of targeted phonetic training programs, leaving a gap in both academic and practical applications. This study aims to address these deficiencies by providing comprehensive acoustic data on stress placement, thereby offering a foundation for refining language teaching methodologies in professional settings (Ibrahim, 2023).

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it offers critical insights into the stress placement rules in Nigerian English among Lagos professionals, providing empirical data to improve phonetic training and communication strategies. The findings will benefit language educators, speech technology developers, and professionals seeking to enhance clarity in formal communication (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing stress placement in Nigerian English among professionals in Lagos, using controlled speech samples and acoustic analysis. It does not extend to informal speech or other regions.
